2020 January Japan. 1/7/20 - Hostess - that's the stuff
On my walk down the more shady (literal and figurative) street to downtown Kyoto are many clubs with (well-dressed) men that attempted to get me to be a customer in their "club" likely hostess clubs.
The "kyabakura" as part of the Japanese night-time entertainment culture. Cabaret + club = Kyabakura.
Essentially men pay the club money to have attractive women shower them with non-sexual attention. There is significant amount of alcohol involved and occasionally the customer is scammed. In concordance with my research, some of them backed down once I told them I was a foreigner but a few continued to insist when I said a few Japanese phrases.
A Jungian interpretation of the Japanese male psyche could be a whole thesis in itself. On the path of individuation, the first step is development of the ego as an individual separate from others. Japan has a culture in which this is very hard to do. This causes the more "shadow" aspects/functions of the male to become troubled - hyper or hypo sexuality (extraverted sensing) and low appreciation of one's value and values (introverted feeling).
These clubs essentially have sexually made-up women shower attention to the man while getting him to buy and drink alcohol, making the club money. They sell a combination of self-esteem and sexuality, chance to interact with anima. My working hypothesis is that Japan is an "INFJ" as a country (or at least the males are) with one of the danger zones being hyper-chasing sensuality (Se) to a harmful degree and the more "hidden" one of lacking awareness / acting with ego.
In a Kierkegaardian sense, these the Japanese man is in the sphere of the ethical but not because they renounced the aesthetic sphere. It is almost it is if as he is in the ethical sphere but wants to be in the aesthetic sphere.... (getting sleepy goodnight)
